Pathogenic Overcharge Guide: Mitochondria, Chains, and Stacking

6 min readLast updated:

Overcharge is not a universal double-damage button. Mitochondria generate energy when their conditions are met, connections deliver it to compatible Organelles, and the receiving tooltip defines the result.

SECTION 01

Start with the receiving effect

Expand the weapon or Organelle you want to improve and find its Overcharge line. It may change damage, attack speed, duration, trigger frequency, or utility. A plus sign, percentage, and multiplier are different operations and should not be treated as interchangeable.

SECTION 02

Trace the complete chain

Follow arrows from the Mitochondrion to the target in the editor. A reversed connection, incompatible slot, or untriggered generator can make a layout look connected while doing nothing.

  1. Record the target value without Overcharge.
  2. Connect one Mitochondrion and satisfy its trigger.
  3. Check the expanded value again.
  4. Add a second source and measure the new change instead of assuming a 2x result.

SECTION 03

Stacking multiple Mitochondria

Public guides and reported developer clarification indicate that valid energy sources can stack, but the outcome is not necessarily twice the final damage. One receiver may gain effect strength, while another changes charge, duration, or a dedicated stat.

SECTION 04

Run a reliable test

Compare similar rooms and change one connection at a time. Use expanded tooltips and the Last Room Damage statistic, while accounting for critical hits, armor, Traits, difficulty modifiers, and temporary buffs.

  • Adjacent rooms in one run produce cleaner evidence than numbers from different seeds or old videos.
  • Some Overcharge effects improve utility rather than direct DPS.
  • Recheck terminology and values after major patches.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do two Mitochondria always double damage?

No. Energy sources can stack, but the receiving Organelle decides which property changes and how it is calculated.

Why is my tracker or weapon not Overcharged?

Check arrow direction, slot compatibility, the Mitochondrion's trigger, and whether the receiver supports that Overcharge effect.
